The new compressor station will be built in the Prettelshofen district of Wertingen in order to increase gas transport capacities and thereby satisfy the growing demand for natural gas. MAN compressors will be installed in the plant.
"Over the next couple of years, Bavaria will be dependent on a reliable supply of natural gas," says Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo. "Until the grid extension is completed, the gas power plants will form the backbone of our energy supply. We are proud to make a contribution for this purpose."
In September 2017, bayernets GmbH began with the construction for the compressor station. This is required because of loss of pressure in the long-distance gas lines. In order to enable large volumes of gas to be transported across longer distances, compressors need to increase the pressure in the pipeline every 150 to 250 kilometers. This is the purpose of the three MOPICO® machines, type RM 50, with integrated MECOS magnetic bearings which compress the natural gas to around 80 bar. The compressors are designed, manufactured and tested at MAN Diesel & Turbo in Zurich (Switzerland).
Environmental aspects also played an important role in the decision on the technical equipment of the plant, as it is being built in the immediate vicinity of Wertingen. "As our MOPICO® systems are hermetically-sealed and equipped with magnetic bearings, they require little space and can be operated emission-free without using oil. This technology meets present-day requirements on the construction of European natural gas compressor stations – requirements which are becoming increasingly established as the standard," explains Matthias Grapow, Vice President, Sales & Contracts Oil & Gas Midstream at MAN Diesel & Turbo. "The high efficiency, operational flexibility and low-maintenance nature of our machines are further benefits that we are able to provide to our customers."
The German network operator has gained good experiences with MAN technology since 2008: bayernets GmBH runs a compressor station in Haiming, Austria, where a MAN compressor train is currently in operation.
The machines will be delivered from summer 2018 onwards. In addition to their delivery, installation and commissioning, the contract also covers maintenance services for the next 20 years. The station will be put into operation in 2019.
